6 Degrees of Computer Science

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

I stumbled across (read: it was on digg) an interesting blog/article about Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering and how they are related as well as different. It is a pretty good account of how these very similar programs are different and how they are the same, although it is a little Comp Sci centered, as evident by the graphic in which Computer Science is glowing green, and everything else seems to connect to it (not to mention that it comes from compsci.ca!). At any rate I think it is fairly accurate, as far as my experience tells me, and relevant considering I just accepted a job in the Mechatronics/Electrical/Computer Engineering area. I wish I could have pointed some people to this website to explain the differences in the programs, or perhaps more importantly, how closely they are related.

Proud owner of a really old Honda Accord

Friday, April 6th, 2007

So, I finally managed to get rid of my old car. I say good-ridince to my old car, a 1999 Mercury Sable. It was an fine automobile, but it just felt like it was falling apart. I had the brakes replaced about a year ago, and they were already going bad again. Granted this is probably more my fault then the fault of the car, but it is still annoying. Also, I have never really heard of many Sable/Taures transmissions making it past about 120K miles. Mine had 108, just entering the danger zone, and I certainly don’t have the money to be replacing transmissions.

So, now I have a 1995 Honda Accord with many more miles on it. It is sitting at right around 207K right now. It seems like a lot more (because it is) but in all honesty, the Accord feels much better, more stable, and in general, a lot more fun to drive. This is probably directly associated with the 5 speed manual, but who knows. On top of all this, I am the 3rd person in my family to drive this car. My mother bought it new, then gave it to my sister when she graduated college, and now, I have it. It brings back a lot of memories from High School since I would always take it on the weekends. A lot of memories were made in this car, but luckily no babies :)

In other news, I started another website, purely as a joke for my friends and myself. If you get the chance, head over to http://www.slatteryslatteryandslattery.com. I have no idea what we are going to do with it, but we just like the name Slattery, Slattery & Slattery. It has a ring to it or something. Its possible that once it becomes unfunny I will convert it into a family site. Seems like something that everyone in my family would enjoy and possibly use. Sort of a Christmas plans/pictures thing. I’m not sure though. I’ll figure something out.
